EDUCATION SESSION - 3 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Remember in a previous session we talked about learning how to catch more fish? Well this session deals with the relationship between catching more fish and the environment. There is a well-used adage that says…”We all live down stream”! What does that mean…? If possible, go to a river, lake or stream, or tidal water, and watch how everything caught in the current moves downstream, or with the tide. Or go out to your driveway and pour a glass of water at the top of the driveway and watch it flow down hill, or in this case down the driveway. This is one example of how runoff travels to waterways that we fish. Now imagine how much damage pollutants could do that got into the water! By trying to restrict the amount of damaging things that get into our water, we can be better stewards of the resource. Storm water runoff, fertilizer, and other chemicals will kill the fish and the habitat they need to survive if we don’t limit their presence in our waterways. We need to continue to take proper care of the species we pursue, as well as their habitat, so they will grow and prosper for us, and for future generations. Too much fertilizer on our yards, plus watering too much, adds to the nutrients in those bodies of water that we fish. Too many nutrients rob the water of oxygen. Can fish live where there is no food? No oxygen? From a different perspective, if the water you fish today, in 5 years, no longer had any quality fish in it, what would you do? Would you stop fishing? Wouldn’t it be good to know how to take care of the water before the fish were gone? Perhaps, you’ve noticed a change in the quality of fishing at your favorite spot, maybe you should notify your fish and wildlife agency. By taking a pro-active approach we can make a difference in the future of our sport. DON'T WANT TO TAKE THIS TEST RIGHT NOW? |
